William "Bill" Paul Metz, 82, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. Visitation: 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 2, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Following visitation, there will be a private graveside service at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Bill was born Oct. 22, 1933, to Lester and Ona Flo (Reavis) Metz in Tama, Iowa. After graduation from high school, he served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. Bill married Shirley Schoettmer on June 7, 1957, in Vinton. He worked in highway maintenance over 30 years for the Iowa DOT.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Bonnie (Daniel) Wagaman; sons, Douglas, Scott, Steven (Jodi) and Ronald (Shelly Konicek) Metz; seven grandchildren, Curtis (Julie Kaneyuki) Wagaman, Jill (Mitch) Allen, Kourtney, Jory (Megan), Ashley (Ethan Hodder), Tristan and Emma Metz; brother, Richard (Janet) Metz; sister, Sharon Kesterson; several brothers- and sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley, of 56 years; one great-granddaughter, Celia Allen; four brothers; and one sister.
Bill enjoyed spending time with his family and often you could find him tinkering with small engines. He also liked watching sports on TV.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
