Weers, Betty
Betty Weers, 86, died Sunday evening, Aug. 14, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello, with interment in Wayne Zion Cemetery. The Rev. Ellery Dykeman will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa.
Surviving are two children, Pat Rieken of Monticello and Virgil (Rhonda) Weers of Center Junction; five grandchildren, Mark (Christine) Rieken and Brenda (Chris) Omar, both of Monticello, Tim (Carrie) Weers, Urbandale, Ben (Brenda) Weers, Polk City, and Nic (Heather) Weers, Center Junction; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Merle Jansen, and two sisters-in-law, Doris and Thelma Darrow, all of Anamosa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin; a sister, Loretta Grassfield; and five brothers, George, Wilson, Wilber, Lloyd and Byron Darrow.
Bertha Irene Darrow was born April 13, 1925, in Fairview Township, Jones County, Iowa, the daughter of Justus and Rienelt (Harms) Darrow. Betty graduated from the Anamosa Community Schools with the class of 1942. She later worked at the Reliance Shirt Factory in Anamosa. Betty Darrow and Alvin Weers were married on April 17, 1945, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Anamosa. The couple farmed on the Weers family farm near Center Junction. Following Alvin's death in August 1977, Betty moved to Anamosa in 1979. She worked part-time at the Anamosa Public Library. In 2005 her health resulted in her moving to the Anamosa Care Center.
She was a member of Wayne Zion Lutheran Church and had belonged to the Paint and Pallet Club in Anamosa.
