IOWA CITY - All Iowa City Regina quarterback Drew Cook wanted for senior night was to enjoy his final regular-season game as a Regal.
By all accounts, the Iowa commit had one of the best games of his prep career by playing a hand in seven of nine Regal touchdowns and leading Regina to a 63-14 victory over Pella Christian at Regina. The win secured the Class 1A-District 6 championship for the Regals, their fifth consecutive title.
'It was a special night for us,” said Cook, who had three passing and four rushing touchdowns. 'I couldn't have asked for a better night. My teammates played incredible.”
Cook and Regals took advantage of excellent field position on their first two drives and led 14-0 with 6:51 to play in the first quarter.
'We executed extremely well,” said Regina Coach Marv Cook. 'I thought we ran the ball and threw the ball well.”
Pella Christian wanted to put up a fight. After backing the Regals into a fourth-and-30, the Eagles took over at the Regina 34. Pella Christian needed only one play as David Kacmarynski hit Levi Jungling in stride on a 66-yard touchdown to cut the Regal lead to 14-7.
'Defensively, we had a letdown early,” said Marv Cook. 'They are a good team. They know what they are doing passing-wise.”
Regina answered quickly.
Jake Brinkman found a seam in the Eagle defense and rumbled 38 yards down to the Pella Christian 15. Two plays later, Cook scored from 2 yards out.
The Eagles scored again early in the second, but the Regal buzzsaw proved too tough to handle.
