James William Platt, 89, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, May 20, 2016, at Pinicon Place, Anamosa. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion where a parish vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

Jim is survived by his wife, Judith Platt; a daughter, Mary Kay (Chris) Detweiler of Central City; and three sons, Gregory (Andra) of Denver, Colo., Dennis of Davenport and Timothy (Beverly) of Louisville, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Kadi, Kara, Alex, Addison, Annie, Casey and Sarah; two great-grandchildren, Kenley and Kya; and a brother, Richard (Vernice) Platt of Geneseo, N.Y.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Joan V. Platt; and his sister, Jane Vogel.

Jim was born April 7, 1927, in New York, the son of Chester and Julia (Shea) Platt. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. Jim graduated from Rochester Business Institute in New York in 1949. On Oct. 13, 1951, he married Joan V. Costello in Clinton. She died Jan. 26, 1995. Jim then married Judy A. Brookens on Dec. 26, 1998, in Cedar Rapids. He worked as an independent insurance agent for many years in Cedar Rapids, before retiring in 2014.

Jim was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Kiwanis Club and Life Underwriters Association.

He was a people person, hardworking, a true gentleman, he was always dressed to a T and enjoyed politics. Jim loved his family. He loved people and was always helping others. He had a great love for jazz music.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Jim's memory.
