Hughes, Arlene
Arlene Hughes, 88, of Marion, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Marion Christian Church, by the Rev. Peter Mitchell. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. and after 10 a.m. Monday at the church.
Arlene is survived by her children, Nancy (Mariamne Whatley) Worcester of Madison, Wis., Diane Hughes of Stoughton, Wis., and Leonard (Deb) Hughes of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, David, Victoria and Samantha Hughes and Thomas Maxwell; great-grandchildren, Collin, Kylee, Kristin and Rylee; and special friends, Betty and June.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arling; brothers, Roy and Howard Guzzle; and sister, Harmie Knouf.
Arlene was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Marion, to Charles and Christine (Gooley) Guzzle. She was a graduate of Marion High School and Cedar Rapids Business College. She worked in the purchasing department of LaPlant Choate Manufacturing Co., the state Soil Conservation office and as secretary to the principal at Bowman Woods School in Marion. Arlene wrote a column called “Sugar and Spice” for the Marion Times for many years. Arlene was state president and served on the national board for Iowa Association of Educational Secretaries for schools, colleges, and universities. She also served on the Linn County Health Improvement Board and was a charter member of Brucemore where she gave tours. She was one of the first women to serve as an Elder at Marion Christian Church where she was a lifetime member.
