Davisson, Verl Clark
Verl Clark Davisson was born Feb. 5, 1922, near Wellman, Iowa, the son of John and Velda (Herr) Davisson. He died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 91 years.
Verl graduated from Wellman High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942-1945, served with the First Infantry Division “Big Red One,” on D-Day he was at Omaha Beach, was in the North Africa Campaign, and was at Battle of the Bulge. Verl earned six Battle Stars, two Invasion Arrow Heads and one Bronze Star.
On Dec. 31, 1947, he was united in marriage to Myra Belle Francis at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in the Wellman community. Verl served on the Iowa State Patrol from 1946-1948. He then farmed and later worked as a mechanic at Sheller Globe in Iowa City for 21 years, retiring in 1985.
Verl was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Farmers Lodge No. 168 A.F. & A.M., and the Charles Polton American Legion Post 427.
Verl is survived by his wife, Myra of Kalona; three sons, Raymond (Barb) of Davenport, Dennis (Nancy) of Longmont, Colo., and Keith (Diane) of Kalona; five grandchildren, Heather Davisson of Delray Beach, Fla., Chad (Sara) Davisson of Bixby, Okla., Angie (Todd) Johnson of Davenport, Dana (Nick) Striegel of Kalona and Ross Davisson and friend Jamie Tadlock of Coralville; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Leota Crim of Washington and Evelyn Gutherie of Sun City West, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Rodney.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. The Rev. John King will officiate. Burial will be in Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m.
A memorial fund has been established for Iowa City Hospice and Pleasantview Home.
