Iowa high school football roundup: Week 8 area scores, stats and more
The chilly weather arrived in Week 8 of the Iowa high school football regular season. A few teams wrapped up district titles, while others shook up playoff races.
Here's a look at our area coverage, plus scores and stats from Friday night.
North Scott 45, Clear Creek Amana 7
The result may not be a surprise but the manner was unexpected.
In a battle of Class 3A District 5 frontrunners, North Scott turned an anticipated close game into a lopsided affair.
Quarterback Nile McLaughlin rush for two touchdowns and threw for another, leading the third-ranked Lancers to a dominant 45-7 victory over No. 6 Clear Creek Amana Clipper Field.
Iowa City West 58, Muscatine 14
West is 7-1, ranked seventh in Class 4A and clinched a district championship and corresponding playoff berth with a 58-14 blowout win at home.
There is no dominant offensive player, though wide receiver Jalen Gaudet is close and Morgan is emerging into one. A ton of guys get touches, and it works beautifully.
Morgan threw two touchdown passes and had one rushing in one half of work, Gaudet had a TD receiving and another on a punt return, fullback Owen McAreavy had a touchdown rushing and receiving ... You get the idea.
Benton Community 34, West Marshall 13
They ran. They passed. They defended.
They rolled.
Hard-nosed and balanced, the seventh-ranked Benton Bobcats whipped No. 5 West Marshall, 34-13, in Class 2A District 7 at Bobcat Stadium.
Midland 40, Central City 28
Central City came in with the unblemished record and gaudy offensive numbers.
But it was Midland that came out with the convincing victory, one which created a three-way tie atop the district standings with one week to go.
Midland junior quarterback Britan Martens ran for 211 yards and four touchdowns.
Cedar Rapids Prairie 70, Waterloo West 14
Friday night had all the makings of a trap game for Class 4A No. 9 Cedar Rapids Prairie.
Rolling into their contest with Waterloo West, the Hawks sported a four-game winning streak, Class 4A's leading rusher (Keegan Simmons), and were facing an opponent without a win in district play.
Oh, and a showdown with No. 3 Cedar Falls for the 4A District 3 title loomed just a week away. The Hawks managed to put all of that to the side, taking a 70-14 win over Waterloo West.
Linn-Mar 49, Iowa City High 14
Alex Hess again topped 200 yards, carrying 18 times for 226 yards and three touchdowns as the Lions broke away late for a convincing 49-14 win on chilly Senior Night.
Linn-Mar (3-5, 2-2 in Class 4A District 4) led just 21-14 midway through the third quarter before pulling away with four touchdowns in the final 15 minutes of play.
Cedar Rapids Washington 61, Burlington 21
In a matchup between a pair of teams searching for their first district win, Cedar Rapids Washington jumped all over Burlington for 47 first-half points on its way to a 61-21 win Kingston Stadium.
The star performance of the night came from Washington halfback Anthony Jones, who finished with a whopping 308 yards and three touchdowns.
Cedar Rapids Xavier 41, Center Point-Urbana 0
Cedar Rapids Xavier (8-0, 4-0 3A-7) dominated both sides of the ball in a 41-0 win over Center Point-Urbana (4-4, 1-3 3A-7).
The win was the Saints' 21st in a row, and its 35th consecutive regular season win. And with four minutes left in the third quarter, the Saints extended the lead to 41 points, putting the continuous clock into effect for the eighth consecutive time this season.
Those are all impressive feats. But the highlight of the game for the Saints came on the team's final score, when Quinn Schulte found teammate Kyle Thompson. The Saints intentionally set up the score for Thompson, who is autistic.
'Kyle's a special teammate to these guys, and it was a special touchdown catch for him tonight,' Xavier Coach Duane Schulte said.
The score was set up as Braden Stovie dropped down on the 2-yard line. On the ensuing play, Schulte found Thompson open in the end zone. The touchdown was the first of Thompson's career.
'This is a moment I'll never forget in my Xavier football career,' Thompson said. 'I have to give Quinn props, he threw a great ball. I kind of juggled it a little, but I still made time to catch it.'
In addition to finding Thompson, Schulte threw touchdown passes to Bryce Bastian and Kyle Moeder.
For the game, Schulte completed 15 of 20 pass attempts for 244 yards and three TDs.
Schulte also had a five-yard rushing TD in the first quarter.

West Branch 26, Cascade 6
The Bears (7-1, 3-1) used a taunt defensive performance to win a key Class 1A District 4 battle.
After Cascade (5-3, 3-1) drove 68 yards on the game's opening possession to take a 6-0 lead, West Branch held the Cougars to just 73 yards for the remainder of the game.
Beau Cornwell rushed for two touchdowns and Tanner Lukavsky added 38-yard scamper late in the fourth.
Lukavsky also had an interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter.
'We just beat a good team,' West Branch Coach Butch Pedersen said after the game.

Decorah 48, Waterloo East 0
The Vikings scored three touchdowns in the final 1:34 of the first quarter and rolled to a win at home.
Drake Shelton rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns and Kolin Krauskopf returned an interception 25 yards for another TD.
Kicker Cam DeLong scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery.

Western Dubuque 62, Marion 28
Ben DeSollar ran for three touchdowns and Jake Hosch added 175 yards on 28 rushes for the Bobcats (6-2, 3-1) at home.
Hosch had three scoring runs in the third quarter and DeSollar rambled for an exclamation point TD from 30 yards midway through the fourth.
Marion fell to 4-4, 3-1.

Waukon 44, Anamosa 24
Dawson Bauers rushed for 225 yards and four second-half touchdowns as the Indians held off the Raiders in Anamosa.
Anamosa (1-7, 0-4) led 11-8 at halftime and was still up 17-16 midway through the third quarter before Waukon (7-1, 4-0) took over.
Matthew Walton led Anamosa with 139 rushing yards and 186 passing before leaving the game with an injury in late in the third quarter. He completed 17 of 28 passes with two TDs, one to Zac McLean, who finished with nine catches for 111 yards.

West Delaware 69, Charles City 28
Cael Meyer rushed 23 times for 201 yards and three touchdowns as the Hawks (4-4, 1-3) rolled at home.
Nick Casey completed 11 of 16 passes for 202 yards and three TDs for West Delaware.
Meyer scored on runs of 81 — on the first play of the game — 18 and 3 yards.
Casey connected with Logan Winn twice, from 38 and 10 yards out.
Jordan Bries and Kieran Managhan both returned fumbles for TDs.

Monticello 50, Oelwein 14
Down 8-6 early, the Panthers (5-3, 3-1) scored 44 unanswered points to win at home.
Lake Stahlberg rushed 17 times for 163 yards and three touchdowns for Monticello — on runs of 33, 38 and 43 yards.
Dillon Arndt had 191 passing yards for Oelwein (2-6, 0-4).

Alburnett 22, Maquoketa Valley 14
Holden Sevenig rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns as the Pirates evened their records at 4-4 overall, 2-2 in A-5.
Hunter Caves added 114 yards on 24 rushes and scored one TD.
Dubuque Hempstead 35, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 0
The J-Hawks (1-7, 1-3) gave up the ball on their first four possessions and lost a total of six fumbles to go along with four interceptions as the Mustangs (3-5, 2-2) earned their second straight win.

Waverly-Shell Rock 27, Independence 0
Ben Hemer rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown and Luke Velky added 98 and two TDs as the Go-Hawks rolled in Independence.
Velky also completed 5 of 8 passes for 56 yards.
Waverly-Shell Rock limited the Mustangs to 133 yards of offense, Logan Schmitt was held to 48 rushing and 42 passing.
