Nichols, William 'Bill'
William “Bill” Nichols, 87, of Bettendorf, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, at Manor Care, Utica Ridge, Davenport. Memorial services in celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2136 Brady St., Davenport.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to the American Lung Association.
Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting his family with arrangements.
Mr. Nichols was born in 1926 in Belle Plaine, Iowa, to Arthur and Frances Nichols. He married Lois Melberg in 1952, in Cedar Rapids. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps from which he was honorably discharged in 1946. During high school and college, he played football and baseball. He earned his BA from Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, and worked thereafter as advertising manager for Dur-o-wall Company, and then in sales for banks and savings and loans, from which he retired in 1995. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye's fan and enjoyed all football and golf. His memberships included St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport.
Survivors include his wife, Lois; sons, David (Dana) Nichols of Bettendorf and Mark (Stacy) Nichols of Pulaski, Va.; grandchildren, Whitney, Morgan and Olivia Nichols, Drew (Stephanie) Nichols and Hannah and Dora Nichols; great-grandsons, John Brady Nichols and William Beckett Nichols; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph Nichols; and a sister, Jane Ealy.
