SYLVIA QUICK
Oskaloosa
Sylvia J. Quick, 76, passed away Aug. 9, 2014, peacefully surrounded by her loving family with the strength, grace and dignity in which she lived.
Sylvia was born Jan. 9, 1938, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Bastian and Gertie VanWoerkom. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1956. On May 21, 1969, Sylvia married the love of her life and soulmate, William Quick. Together they raised their children in North English, Marengo, Oklahoma and Texas before returning to Iowa to retire. Bill passed away in 2007.
Sylvia was an avid reader, as well as a news, history and political buff. In the early 1960s, her love of politics led her to work on Kennedy's presidential campaign. Sylvia enjoyed spending time watching NASCAR and following the Cyclones and Aggie football. Wherever she lived she created beauty with the gift of her green thumb. She loved flowers and lived for the spring and summer when she could plant and tend to her garden.
She is survived by her children, Brian (Christi) Uitermarkt, Riverside, Pam (Lynn) Morrison, North English, Terrie Duhon, Atlus, Okla., Teresa (Brian) Hagen, Watkins, Stacy (Nate Barfels) Garringer, Cedar Rapids, and Sonja (Martin) Hayes, Urbandale; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; her brothers John (Louise) VanWoerkom, Pella, and Larry (Rose) VanWoerkom, New Sharon; and sister-in-law Jean (Clay) Hardy, Tuskahoma, Okla.
She will be reunited with her parents; husband, Bill; grandson, Tucker Morrison; great-grandson, Thomas Dietze; and great-granddaughter, Junella Dietze, in Heaven.
A celebration of her life will be Saturday, Aug. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Newhall Park Pavilion in Newhall.
Memorials may be made to UnityPoint Hospice in Cedar Rapids.
