Baughman, Marvis 'Ann'
Marvis “Ann” Baughman, 85, of the Meth-Wick Community, Cedar Rapids, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, from cancer.
Ann is survived by two daughters, Dana Baughman Chapman (Kyle) of Cedar Rapids and Melanie Baughman Raffel (Greg) of Chesterfield, Mo.; and grandson, Carter Lyle Chapman of Cedar Rapids; as well as her sister, Lurilene S. McIntosh of Fairfax, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Henry; parents; and brother, Roger (Bobby).
Ann was born July 24, 1928, in Alexandria, Va., to Ralph Elwood and Thelma Jane (Allen) Shepherd. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, Lillian Maude (Rodgers) and Edgar Ross Allen in what is now known as Old Town Alexandria. During World War II, her mother moved Ann and her siblings to West Palm Beach, Fla. Ann worked as a duty driver at Westover Air Base, at a photography studio and later a bakery before returning to Alexandria in 1947. While living with her aunt, Audrey (Allen) and husband, Roger Barnes, she worked at the Red Cross and Food Lion as a bookkeeper.
Ann met her future husband, Lyle, at a USO dance. Lyle and Ann were married Feb. 24, 1951, at the First Baptist Church in Alexandria, Va. When Lyle got out of the Army, they moved to his hometown of Griswold, Iowa, where he worked in his father and grandfather's earth-moving business, Baughman & Son. While there, their daughters, Dana Kay and Melanie Ann, were born.
In 1960, Lyle and Ann and their girls moved to Cedar Rapids. Ann worked at Sears in the accounting department and then in the ticket office at the Five Seasons Center when it opened. Her favorite job was taking care of her only grandchild, Carter, and attending all of his music, show choir, sports and Scout activities. She played in a number of bridge clubs, enjoyed entertaining, decorating and spending time with her family and friends, including her Cedar Hills Community Church family, where she had been a member since 1960. She will be remembered most for her love of family and sense of humor.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Cedar Hills Community Church with the funeral following at 11:30 a.m. A luncheon will follow at the church. A committal service with will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Kent Landhuis. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
A memorial fund in Ann's name has been established at Cedar Hills Community Church.
