Jeanne Ellen Skalsky-Carter, 70, of Marion, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, at Mercy Hallmar, Cedar Rapids. Memorial services: 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, with a visitation one hour before the service. Inurn-ment will take place at Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, at a later date.
Jeanne is survived by her husband, Dan Carter.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Judi Skalsky.
Jeanne was born to Rose Elizabeth (Turecek) and Milton H. Skalsky on June 14, 1944, during World War II. She graduated from Jefferson High School as part of the National Honor Society with a DAR award for an essay entry and an Elks Leadership Scholarship. Jeanne went on to graduate from the University of Iowa in 1966, with majors in French, art history and fine arts education. She taught in Fresno, Calif., Buffalo, N.Y., and Marion, Iowa. Jeanne spent a year in Paris studying at the Alliance Francais and the Ecole de Louvre. She studied art restoration, art history, French, German and print making while holding a work study tuition fellowship at the Hoover Museum. Jeanne work at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City and the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art in 1998 where she was a docent.
Jeanne married Daniel Milton Joseph Carter in 1983 after a three-year engagement. She worked as a substitute teacher in the Cedar Rapids public schools and studied as she worked as a horticulturist at Kirkwood Community College and ranked in the upper three percent of the college.
Jeanne designed several handmade quilts and linens and wrote an unpublished journal that contained many prints and watercolors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to an organization of the donor's choice in Jeanne's memory.
