VIDEO: Blast that unnerved Zach Johnson Sunday

Jul. 13, 2015 1:06 pm
I was very close to the 16th green of TPC Deere Run when some genius in a boat on the bordering Rock River unleashed what was either an air cannon or an M-80 firecracker Sunday afternoon.
The reaction by Zach Johnson in the video linked to this post was completely understandable. I think I jumped, too. I know my heart did.
Johnson was in the process of attempting a putt of about 35 feet while competing for the John Deere Classic championship. Had the blast happened a half-second later, there's no telling where his putt would have stopped. But he was able to stop his backswing.
'We're used to a lot of things,” Johnson said after his round of 65 that left him one shot from a playoff with Tom Gillis and champion Jordan Spieth. 'Maybe not quite that severity or that odd of a thing, but at the same time, regrouping and delays and all that kind of stuff, you've just gotta roll with it.”
Reports said it was an air cannon, but the Quad City Times reported it was an M-80. Not that it matters which was the case. It was the action of a dimwit.
This QConline.com story Monday reports Silvis, Ill., police are seeking information on the explosion.
