By Morgan Breitbach, Xavier juniorCEDAR RAPIDS - Although Xavier High School does not have a swimming team, eight boys participate at other Metro high schools, including Washington and Kennedy. Both schools have completed their regular seasons, and four of the Xavier swimmers competed in last Saturday's district meets with senior Nick Durin qualifying for state. Sophomore Mitch Anderson is an alternate.“We are tapering now, which is going well,” said junior Evan Bednar, who swims for Kennedy.Bednar is joined by sophomore Nick Lyon at Kennedy. Durin and Anderson swim for Washington. Despite being from a different school, the swimmers mesh well with their welcoming teammates.“I have made very good friends," Bednar said. "I really like hanging out with my teammates.”Durin qualified for state in the 100 breaststroke, 50 freestyle, the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay, helping Washington win its 51 straight district title. The state swim meet will take place Saturday in Marshalltown.
