By Ellie Meyer, Xavier sophomoreCEDAR RAPIDS - Four different sports, three state championships, two personal injuries and one Mikalya Sherman.Sitting on the sidelines of a game and not getting any playing time may be discouraging and boring to some, but Sherman believes it is an opportunity to be part of the team. After tearing a shoulder ligament and her meniscus, Sherman traded in her athletic career to become the manager for the girls' basketball, softball, soccer and volleyball teams.Taking on the challenge of supporting her teammates, Sherman does more work than people know."Most people would say I do the dirty work," she said. "I go to most practices, all the games, set up drills for practice and fill up so many water bottles you wouldn't believe. I take stats, shag balls and help with whatever I can."Although she's not competing, she puts all her emotions into the game. She is happy when the Saints win,and sad when they loose. It's all part of the wanting to be able to play along with them."I want them to succeed, probably more than they do, because I see how hard they work every day," Sherman said. When sharing emotions with the players, she feels like she is out there with them."She is a great fan and supporter for us," varsity player Jenny Dickes said. "It's great to know we have her to watch for the little things so we can focus on the game."This is more than just a team, however. It's a big family."My favorite part is making memories and friends," Sherman said. "I've been blessed with the best teammates. I can walk away after not winning state or not winning a game and be happy because my team and the experiences I've had are incredible."If I didn't love all this, I wouldn't do it. And I truly love it with all I got."
