CEDAR RAPIDS - The Xavier boys' bowling team has so many members, it needs bowl-offs to decide who gets to compete in meets each week.
This is a luxury the girls' team cannot afford.
In bowling, six players compete and the top five scores are taken. For the girls, all scores are taken because there are only five members.
Despite this, the girls are competing and getting along well.
'I have a lot of fun bowling with the other girls,' freshman Tanya Zaugg said. 'I think the team is really close.'
The boys are trying to build on last year's state trip and junior Caleb Miller's state championship in Class 1A. They are off to a good start after beating Waterloo East, Iowa City West and Iowa City High to start the season.
'We keep improving our last scores and we're growing as a team,' said senior Zach Klimesh. 'We're doing great. We're currently undefeated and consistently getting better.'
The Saints return to action Friday against Washington at Lancer Lanes, starting at 3:45 p.m.
