Fun Facts: Northwestern-Iowa

Hey, it's the final Iowa men's basketball home game of the season. It seems like only yesterday we were doing Fun Facts for Maryland Baltimore County-Iowa.

UMBC, by the way, lost 66-39 to Vermont in the quarterfinals of the America East Conference tournament Wednesday to finish its season with a 4-26 record.

But this is Northwestern. And these are Fun Facts:

1. Northwestern has a 2-game winning streak over Iowa, the latest a 66-61 overtime win on Feb. 15.

2. However, Iowa was won the last two games over the Wildcats in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and by a total of 40 points.

3. Iowa is going for a sixth-straight Big Ten victory, something it hasn't attained since it began the 1987 Big Ten season with six wins. The first of those was an 80-44 blasting of Northwestern. Iowa was 30-5 that season. The Wildcats were 7-21.

4. Northwestern beat Michigan in double-overtime Tuesday, 82-78. The Wildcats hadn't scored that many points in a Big Ten game since their 83-64 win over Iowa in 2012.

5. Wildcat senior guard Dave Sobolewski had 23 points for Northwestern that night, when he was a freshman. He is now a senior, and has never scored that much in a Big Ten game since.

6. Senior JerShon Cobb had 14 points in 33 minutes for the Wildcats Tuesday. He hadn't played in the ‘Cats previous six games because of injury.

7. Since the Iowa-Northwestern game in Evanston, the two teams are a combined 9-1.

8. This is the first time Iowa has posted three straight 20-win seasons in this millennium.

9. Iowa senior Aaron White is from Strongsville, Ohio. Other famous people who lived in Strongsville include John D. Rockefeller and William Rockefeller.

10. Iowa senior Gabe Olaseni is from London. Other famous people who have lived in London include Prince Charles, Prince Harry, and Kelly Osbourne.

11. Iowa senior Josh Oglesby is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Other famous people who lived in Cedar Rapids include Grant Wood, the Wright brothers, and Ashton Kutcher.

12. Iowa senior Kyle Denning was put on scholarship last year when teammate Darius Stokes transferred to Fairleigh Dickinson. Graduate student Stokes, by the way, had 8 points, 4 rebounds and 4 blocks in 22 minutes in FDU's 73-66 win over Central Connecticut State last Saturday in his team's home-finale. Stokes started 28 of his team's 29 games. FDU ended its season with an 8-21 record.
