Philip Morris Jones was born Sept. 12, 1940, in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Mabel (Klever) Jones. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1959. Philip served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1963 to 1965. He worked as a quality controller for Amana Refrigeration for 37 years, retiring in 2003. Philip was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Iburg Poulson VFW Post No. 8797, where he was post commander for 10 years, Williamsburg Historical Society and past member of the Machinist Union No. 1526. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling, volunteering at the Williamsburg Historical Society, helping with community events and working with the local VFW. He was grand marshal for the Williamsburg Fourth of July parade in 2016 and recently was the recipient of the 2018 Iowa County Commission of Veterans Affairs' Veteran of the Year.
Philip passed away Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018, at the VA Health Care System in Iowa City at the age of 78 years.
He is survived by his cousins, Betty (James) Epley of Shellrock and John (Madiline) Sperry of Green Valley, Ariz., and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of life service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Williamsburg with military rites by the Iburg Poulson VFW Post No. 8797. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. There will be a VFW service at 7 p.m.
