STANWOOD - Yearbook ad sales got started on Sept. 12th in the towns of Lowden, Wheatland, Clarence and Tipton.
The North Cedar High School yearbook staff asked local businesses to sponsor advertisements in the book to help make it affordable for students. The staff learned crucial communication skills that will help them in the future.
Yearbook staff members went to almost every business in the four communities. Their yearbook adviser, Carla Green, drove the school suburban with her seven students, eager to hop out (after the vehicle was stopped) and sell ads.
It would not be beneficial for the talented staff to produce an excellent yearbook no one can afford.
Sale of advertisements for the yearbook not only benefits the staff, but the school and the businesses that purchase the space. Businesses that purchase ads are supporting the yearbook and promoting their businesses. Many people read and enjoy the work the staff produces and a large audience will see the advertisements.
Each area business has the opportunity to show their support for the school. The staff takes time out of school to drive to the towns in the district to help raise the money. This interaction with professional environments is part of the benefit to the students.
Students in the staff had to be able to sell their product and persuade the businesses to support their cause. Two students in particular were forced into using those skills at the Purina elevator in Clarence. The owner specifically told them to 'sell me.” With the skills practiced in the classroom, the students ended up walking out the door with a sale.
The staff is not quite done with the sales and will be out hunting for more businesses in Stanwood, Mechanicsville, Mount Vernon and Lisbon soon.
