Payton, Marion
ANAMOSA - On Oct. 19, 2010, Marion Payton was called home to his Lord and Savior, after a lengthy illness. He passed away at the Jones Regional Medical Center in Anamosa quite peacefully. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Oct. 25 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mount Vernon.
Marion “Mert” was born April 12, 1938, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Francios Payton and Stella Danly. He grew up in Fairview, in the family store, and at a young age moved in with his Grandma Bemrose. His aunts, Rose and Ollie, helped raise him. He received his education in the Anamosa Community Schools and graduated in 1956. Marion married Carol Rae Kutz on Nov. 27, 1957, in Preston, Minn. She passed away in 2003 after 45 years of marriage. Marion married Jeannie Boots on April 9, 2005.
Through the years Marion had few careers and made many friends. Some of his jobs included Smith Ois, Anamosa Silos, Collins Radio, Schoff Construction, Brown and Dyer, Iowa State Industry, and the last 15 years of his career he worked at Weyerhaeuser Paper until his retirement in 2002.
Surviving are his children: Michael (Ann) Payton, Anamosa, and children, Joanna and Robert; Chuck (Anne) Payton, Iowa City, and children, Maria and Ben; Mary Sue (Phil) Wood, Anamosa, and children, Tammy, Linda, Jon and April; Martin Payton, Anamosa, and children, Nathan and Rachel; Mathew (Shelly) Payton, Monticello, and children, Caleb, Cole, Cade and Braeden; and Marshal Payton's children, Emma Vaughen and Max King; stepchildren, Harry Boots, Monticello, and Laura Johnson, Anamosa; brother, Louis (Anna) Payton, Savannah, Mo.; sister, Lois Colvin, Newell, Iowa; sister-in-law, Jean Coon, Boyceville, Wis.; and brothers-in-law, Eldon Kutz, Austin, Texas, and Richard Bading, Cedar Rapids.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol; son, Marshal; stepparents, Vi and Jim; brothers, John, Woody, James and Wayne; and sister, Paulin.
Marion will be missed dearly by all his friends, family and church family.
