CLARENCE - The state cheer competition in here, and North Cedar squad is ready.
North Cedar's competition cheer team has come far the past few years. This year's team, with 15 members and two alternates, is working extra hard, having 6 a.m. practices three times a week, along with many Saturday practices.
The team is coached by Ashley Fuller and Brittany Potts. Potts became the Spanish teacher last year and stepped in to help the cheer program. She is teaching tumbling for the routine this year.
'I really want a trophy this year and I think we have the ability this year to get one,” Fuller said to the team at practice.
On Thursday nights, senior captain Chelsea Lovell drives a car load of girls to Cedar Rapids to a tumbling gym where they meet Potts and work on back tucks, flips, round-offs and many more tumbling stunts. Everyone in the routine has a tumbling part, ranging from front rolls to cartwheels to back tucks.
The state meet is Saturday in Des Moines Saturday. The North Cedar cheer team also is performing Thursday at 5:45 p.m. in the Mechanicsville Elementary gym.
