Logic leads Iowa women to exhibition win
Nov. 6, 2011 3:30 pm
IOWA CITY - Iowa fans caught their first glimpse of all-everything freshman Samantha Logic, and she failed to disappoint Sunday afternoon.
Logic notched game-highs in points (16), assists (six) and steals (six) to pace the Iowa women to a 65-51 exhibition win against Winona (Minn.) State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Logic hit 7-of-10 from the field and grabbed four rebounds. She had only one turnover in 23 minutes.
“I thought Sam Logic had a really nice first game,” Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder said. “You can see why she's a fun player to watch. A fun player to coach, leading scorer, assists, steals, rebounds ... fun to see her get out on the floor.
“I love to see her out on the floor looking like she belongs, and she does belong. It's obvious.”
Logic was all over the court, from diving for loose balls to playing aggressive defense.
“That's just how you've got to play,” Logic said, “going back to the intensity and hustle. That's what I try to bring.”
Winona State won 21 games and advanced to the Division II national tournament last year. The Warriors out-rebounded Iowa 42-37 and led 23-19 at halftime. The game wasn't easy for Iowa, nor was it intended to be, Bluder said. She told Winona State Coach Scott Ballard as much before the game.
“We're so glad you're here because we have so much respect for you and your program, and you're going to identify things for us that we need to work on,” Bluder told Ballard. “You don't do that when you blow people out. I thought it was a great exhibition contest.”
Iowa's offense stalled in the first half, and the Hawkeyes shot just 25.8 percent from the floor. Iowa trailed until Jaime Printy sank a 3-pointer with 18:31 left in the game to give the Hawkeyes a 27-26 lead. Iowa hit nearly 56 percent in the second half and outscored Winona State 38-5 off turnovers.
Guard Kamille Wahlin and center Morgan Johnson each scored 10 points for Iowa. Kelly Krei added seven points.
