Brett John Murdoch, 36, of Marion, flew home with Jesus on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Visitation: 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 3855 Katz Dr., Marion. Funeral service: 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Pastor Mike Morgan. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. A reception will follow at the Legacy Center at Murdoch-Linwood.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa; parents, Kathy Murdoch and John (Kim) Murdoch; sisters, Jaime (Daniel) Steward and Hailey (Quinn) Casey; grandmother, Marlyce Murdoch; nieces and nephew, Maddyn, Campbell and George Steward and Reagan, Makinley and Alivia Casey; stepsiblings, Brock, Cody and Jordan Bickford; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws and stepfamily; and a special band of brothers who were his best friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, George Murdoch; grandmother, Ellen Rae; great-grandparents; and uncle, Garth Powers.
Brett was born Nov. 3, 1980, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of John and Kathy (Rae) Murdoch. He graduated from Marion High School in 1999. Brett married Lisa Downs on April 8, 2006, in Marion. Brett was an avid and loyal Hawkeye sports fan. He loved traveling to Gulf Shores, Ala., and going mushroom hunting at his grandmother's farm in Decorah. Brett loved his "dog-dog" Brewster. He had a great sense of humor, and his smile could light up the room. Brett's heart was kind and good, and he was loved by so many. He will be so greatly missed.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mercy Medical Center and Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy for their compassionate care of Brett and his entire family.
A memorial fund has been established in Brett's memory.
