Null, William M.
William M. Null, a child of God, went home to be with Jesus on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.
Surviving to honor William's memory are his son, Billy Satterfield; daughter, Elizabeth Burkholder; granddaughters, Angelica and Sierra; his mother, Mary Rudish Null; and sister, Marie.
William was born Nov. 15, 1947, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Marvin F. Null and Mary Rudish Null. He was a resident of Marion, but lived for a time in Los Angeles, Calif.; Salt Lake City, Utah; and London, England. William attended the First United Methodist Church in Marion, while in his youth. William also found joy in attending Mount Zion Baptist Church. William graduated from Marion High School in 1966. While at Marion High School, he was a gifted student athlete. He excelled in athletics, participating in football, basketball and track. William held the record at Marion High School for pole vault for many years. William was also a gifted musician. He was a violinist and an accomplished guitarist.
After graduating from Marion High School, he went to Upper Iowa College and then transferred to Los Angeles City College in California. He remained in Los Angeles, establishing himself as a prominent musician, playing with many famous bands in Los Angeles and in San Francisco. His musical journey took him and his band to London, England, Paris, France, Germany, Spain and Morocco.
William was an accomplished woodsman and loved the woodlands, rivers and lakes of Iowa. He felt equally at home in the wilderness of the Great Rocky and Wasatch Mountains. His knowledge of wild animals that inhabit the woodlands and mountains was vast. He had a profound respect and reverence for nature and found solace, guidance and healing while abiding with nature.
William loved and cherished his children and grandchildren. His great joy was watching his son play the guitar. He enjoyed the company of family and friends and always had time for a softball or Wiffle ball game with his family.
In the early 1990s, Bill was a concert promoter and brought in many legendary blues bands. He welcomed all who came into his life and accepted them as they were.
William will be greatly missed, forever loved and his memory will remain in our hearts forever.
Rest in peace. Until we meet again.
