CHRISTOPHER ALAN SCHMITT
Cedar Rapids
Christopher Alan Schmitt, 41, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at his home after an extended illness. Private family services and a celebration of life at the Second Avenue Corner Pocket in Cedar Rapids will be at a later date. His body was cremated.
Survivors include his children, Sean, Katy and Dylan Knapp; aunt, Patricia Higgins; stepfather, James Rairdin; and the children's mother, Jen Matthews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Mike Schmitt; and his mother, Sue Schmitt-Rairdin.
Chris was born Nov. 3, 1975, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Sue and Mike Schmitt. He graduated from Prairie High School, during which time he earned his Eagle Scout, served in the Army National Guard, and worked many years at Yellowbook (hibu).
Chris enjoyed playing pool, bowling, playing cards and generally being silly, but his one true love was that for his children.
He was a loving and dedicated father and his loss will be deeply felt by not only his children, but his many close friends and family for years to come.
Cards and memorials may be sent to the kids at 1550 Fifth Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403.
Thank you so much to his hospice care team and to Holly O. and Tammy M. for their tireless compassionate care in his last days. The wealth of love showed to him by his friends and family at the end were a testament to the way Chris lived his life.
