PEORIA, Ill. - Steve Bean hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to help the Peoria Chiefs past the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 7-5, in Midweest League baseball Tuesday afternoon.
Bean's hit made a loser of starting pitcher John Curtiss (2-3), who allowed six hits and six runs in six innings. He walked two and struck out four.
Cedar Rapids (23-16) took a 4-2 lead in the third inning on Trev Vavra's three-run, inside-the-park home run. He has six home runs this season, four of the three-run variety.
He and Pat Kelly each had two hits. Robby Rowland retired all eight batters he faced, five via strikeout, to notch his league-leading eighth save.
The teams play again Wednesday night.
