C.R. Kernels beat Clinton, reduce playoff magic number to 4

CLINTON — Zander Wiel and Jaylin Davis homered to help the Cedar Rapids Kernels pick up their fifth-consecutive victory Friday night, 9-5, over the Clinton LumberKings.
The Kernels (73-57, 37-24 second half) reduced their magic number for clinching a Midwest League playoff spot here in the second half to four. The teams play again Saturday night.
Wiel, Davis and Travis Blankenhorn finished with three hits apiece for Cedar Rapids. The Kernels had 14.
Starting pitcher Tyler Beardsley (1-2) notched his first Kernels victory, allowing four hits and a pair of runs in six innings.
