John N. "Jack" Knapp, 93, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and formerly of Cascade, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2018, at his home in Cedar Rapids, surrounded by his family.
Friends and relatives of Jack may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 6, 2018, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade, where a wake service will be held at 3 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Services for Jack will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2018 at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade, with his grandson, the Rev. Ross Epping, presiding. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Cascade, with full military honors afforded by Cascade American Legion Post 528.
He was born Feb. 21, 1925, in Cascade, the son of John and Mayme (Weber) Knapp Sr. He received his education in the Garryowen Country Schools. On June 15, 1950, he was united in marriage to Venita Casey at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade. The couple farmed in the rural Cascade area until retiring in 1985.
He is an Army veteran, having served in World War II in the South Pacific as an Army engineer.
He was a member of St. Jude's Parish in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He also was a member of American Legion Post 528 for 70 years. He delivered Meals on Wheels for 25-plus years and also helped manage a hotel in Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his wife, Venita Knapp of Cedar Rapids; seven children, Maureen Ries (Dave McCabe) of Galena, Ill., Debra (Bill) Schmelling of Cedar Rapids, Gary "Morgan" (Sheila) Knapp of Cascade, Juli (Don) Vrotsos of Dubuque, Iowa, Jacki Knapp (Bruce Woolfolk) of Cedar Rapids, Peggy (Ed) Epping of Atkins, Iowa, and Kelly Knapp of Marion, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard "Dick" (Betty) Knapp of Bernard, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Leo Biehl of Maquoketa, Iowa, Dell (Bev) Casey of Brentwood, Calif., John Casey of Des Moines, Iowa, and Pat (Sharon) Casey and Chuck (Donna) Casey, both of Cascade; three sisters-in-law, Cherri Wessels of Dyersville, Iowa, Gerene O'Brien of Monticello, Iowa, and Gloria Casey of Mission, Texas; and their family dogs, Max and Dolly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bob Knapp; a sister, Lois Biehl; two brothers, Robert Knapp and Billy (Janice) Knapp; and three sons-in-law, John Burds, Ken Ries and Mike Maddigan.
