CEDAR RAPIDS — Former Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Hugh McGing and Scott Perunovich have been named to the preliminary roster for a United States team that will compete in the upcoming World Junior Championships hockey tournament.
McGing is a sophomore at Western Michigan University, Perunovich a freshman at Minnesota-Duluth. They are among 28 players vying for a spot on the final 23-man roster for the tournament, which is December 26 to January 5 at Buffalo, N.Y.
McGing played in 114 games for the Riders from 2014 to 2016, scoring 34 goals and adding 36 assists. Perunovich had six goals and 15 assists in 56 games last season for C.R.
'Congratulations to Hugh McGing and Scott Perunovich on being named to the preliminary USA World Junior Roster,' said RoughRiders Head Coach/General Manager Mark Carlson. 'This is a tremendous honor and something to be extremely proud of. It is great to see Hugh and Scott having great seasons at Western Michigan and Minnesota-Duluth.'
The United States won last season's World Junior Championships, with former RoughRiders Erik Foley and Jack Ahcan part of the team.
In other RoughRiders news, forward Harry Roy has been selected to play in the 2018 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. That game is January 9 at Kearney, Neb.
Roy has two goals and four assists in 18 games this season and is committed to play college hockey at Maine.
'Nice opportunity for Harry,' said Carlson. 'He's earned it by listening, executing and working extremely hard. He really wants to be a good hockey player.'
