CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar Rapids Kernels had their Midwest League game against Kane County postponed Monday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium because of wet weather. But that didn't mean it was a news-less day for the club.
The parent Minnesota Twins announced Kernels outfielder Daniel Kihle and pitcher Michael Cederoth have been activated from the seven-day disabled list, catcher Bryant Hayman has been sent to extended spring training in Florida, catcher Brian Olson has been added to the C.R. roster from extended and relief pitcher Logan Lombana has been placed on the restricted list.
Kernels Manager Jake Mauer confirmed the latter move was made because Lombana has tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug. The 21-year-old from Long Beach State had no record and a 3.38 earned run average in seven appearances for Cedar Rapids, striking out 16 in 16 innings.
Lombana is suspended for 80 games. That includes not even being allowed to work out at the Twins minor-league complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
'He doesn't know where it came from, thought he was doing all the right things,' Mauer said. 'Not good. He was throwing the ball pretty well, was starting to grow into a role. But you shine light on it, hopefully it's a learning experience. This is a serious deal, and they're not messing around with it.'
Hayman hit .121 in 12 games for the Kernels, with two RBIs. Olson was a 34th-round draft pick last year out of Seattle University and hit .302 with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 32 games at two Rookie-ball stops.
Kihle played two innings for the Kernels a little over a week ago before going down with a knee injury on a collision with a teammate while chasing a flyball. Cederoth was supposed to break spring training with Cedar Rapids, but incurred an oblique strain that kept him in extended.
He pitched last season for the Kernels until going on the disabled list for the remainder of the season in early June because of an undisclosed illness.
The Kernels and Kane County (both 16-13) are scheduled to play a double-header Tuesday night beginning at 5:35.
