Predicament releases academic all-state picks

They have brains and brawn.

Fort-two wrestlers were named to The Predicament's Academic All-State teams Friday, according to a news release from the statewide wrestling publication. Two teams and an honorable mention list include six state champions and 29 state medalists.

The average grade-point average of the selections was 3.97 and 130 wrestlers from across the state were nominated.

Mount Vernon senior Trey Ryan earned first-team accolades. He won the Class 2A 170-pound state title in February, capping his prep career with a 47-4 record as a senior.

He was joined by West Delaware's Patrick Woods and Sam Phillips. Woods went 47-2, placing third at 113 in 2A after winning the 106-pound title as a junior. Phillips finished fourth at 126, posting a 42-6 mark.

Linn-Mar's Noah Ajram, West Delaware's Jake Voss, Elliot Henderson, of West Liberty, and West Branch's Tyler Donovan made the second team. Ajram was seventh for the Lions at 113 in 3A, going 33-8. Voss finished 43-6, placing fourth at 160 in 2A. In 1A, Henderson (42-6) was seventh at 120 and Donovan (41-6) was sixth at 152.

Other Gazette-area athletes chosen for honorable mention were Solon state champion and University of Iowa recruit Lance Evans, Oelwein's Zach Lamphere, Iowa City West's Jakeb Bakken, Western Dubuque's Collin Koerperich, BGM's Adam Hawkins and Logan Pasker, of Dyersville Beckman.
