Back to track for Kennedy's Schulz
Jeff Linder Apr. 8, 2014 10:00 pm
MARION -- Mark Schulz approached Brian White last winter about the possibility of a multi-sport spring. White recalled his brief reply:"Hell, yes." Schulz's return to track competition was a winner at the Clark Weaver Lion Relays Tuesday night at Linn-Mar Stadium, anchoring Cedar Rapids Kennedy to victory in the 1,600-meter medley relay. His split: 2:00.7.Schulz had been a soccer-only competitor for Kennedy the past two years, then decided to branch out this spring. "I just figured, "Let's give this a try,' " said Schulz, a junior. "The soccer coaches have been good about it, so I get in on about an hour of track practice." Kennedy paced the eight-team race with 106 points. Dubuque Senior was second with 89.5 points, followed by Waterloo West (84) and Linn-Mar (81). Schulz received the baton with the lead, relinquished it, but refused to fade. He stayed on the heels of Linn-Mar's Daniel Murphy until the final 200 meters, when he took off, regained the lead and continued to build on it. The Cougars were clocked in 3:42.26. "I guess the last 200 is my specialty," Schulz said. "Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't." Schulz is a forward for the soccer team, so he's part of two teams that rate in the top five in the big-school class. He was second in the 400 meters before his dramatic anchor in the medley. "What I'd like is to be able to help (the track team) in 400s and 800s," he said. "I ran track in middle school, and was pretty good at it." Event titles were spread out across the board. Senior won four events, Kennedy and West three apiece. Shaun Beyer was the high jump champion (clearing 6 feet) and was a member of Kennedy's winning shuttle hurdle relay squad. Linn-Mar's Josh Evans starred on Senior Night on his home track. He brought the Lions back from a 30-mater deficit in the 3,200-meter relay (he also split at 2:00.7), then picked up the pace throughout a 4:16.95 effort in the 1,600-meter run. "I wanted to go out at 2:03 (in the 1,600), really blast it," Evans said. "But the way the weather was, my coaches told me to go out more like 2:10." Evans ran the first lap in a controlled 1:06, then gained speed. "Obviously, I've got a lot of big races coming up. I need to get accustomed to a real hot pace," Evans said. Iowa City High's Bryson Runge won the 100 and anchored the Little Hawks' winning 800 relay.
