A former small-business owner and computer software skills instructor, I served 20 years on the City Council before becoming Mayor in mid-2023. Additionally, I currently serve as the Metropolitan Planning Organization ‘s Executive Committee and Policy Board Chairperson, and as the incoming President of the Iowa League of Cities Mayors Association Executive Committee.
I have two married adult sons, enjoy college sports, reading, flower gardening, and participating in all our local activities.
A Cedar Rapids native, I graduated from Washington High School before spending a few years working in the nightclub and real estate industries. I then followed in my father’s footsteps and entered the paint contracting business, where I've built a career spanning over 30 years. My wife and I have called Fairfax home for more than 15 years, proudly raising our two children in the community we love. For the past seven years, I've had the honor of serving on the Fairfax Planning and Zoning Board.
My top three priorities include: a variety of housing and local business options with connected neighborhoods, exceptional fire, library, and recreation services and spaces, and minimal debt with easy-to-understand, easily accessed information.
- Common sense leadership.
- Focus on practical, balanced decision-making that reflects the needs and values of Fairfax residents, rather then outside interest or short term gains. - Fostering community collaboration.
I feel our biggest challenge today is maintaining our thriving small town charm without incurring excessive debt. Community-involved goal setting and strategic planning by the City Council will keep our “Home Sweet Home” headed in the right direction.
Fairfax is growing, and I want to make sure that growth happens in a structured, responsible way that keeps our small-town character, while supporting local business and improving services.
Alliant Energy has been an excellent community partner to-date. However, after dozens of thoughtful conversations with residents, I do not feel that a power plant within our city limits is a good fit.
I believe the project has potential benefits for our community, but it's important the city council review all the facts before making a decision. Community input should play a key role in determining whether this project is the right fit for Fairfax.
Fairfax continues to have a Mayor/City Council form of government. Responsible for the day-to-day city operation, the City Administrator will make recommendations to the Council. However, the Mayor and City Council set the City’s direction and policies which are accomplished through the City Council’s vote. The Mayor, City Council, and City Administrator should work together towards a common goal.
I have worked with the administrator for several years while serving on the Planning and Zoning committee.
Building team work and open communications between, council members, city staff, and residents will help ensure everybody works together toward shared goals
