Kent McNally (D)

Candidate, Iowa House - District 83

Happily married for over 24 years to Juliene McNally with a blended family of four children, four grandchildren, with two more on the way. Church plays a big role in my life and within our family. I have been in the electrical trade for over 30 years, with the last nine years as an electrical instructor at the IBEW 405 JATC. I have called Central City home since 1999 and have had the enjoyment of being active in it many different ways whether through the school or community (shop local!).

1. What are the three most important issues the state is facing? What will you do to address them?

1. Women's issues 2. Public schools 3. Working class and their families 1) Be an advocate for Pro Choice and other women's health issues. 2) Push for Proper Funding for AEAs, public schools, teacher pay (benefits), and the effect vouchers are having in the state, good or bad. 3) Increase minimum wage, extend back unemployment, look at the cost of childcare (especially for single parents), and promote collective bargaining rights for workers who want them.

2. Are there areas of the state budget where you think funding should be increased? What are they and why is more funding necessary?

Mental health facilities (adult and children). There's a lot of talk about these issues, but nothing is getting done about the lack of places to go for Iowans to get the help needed and some, unfortunately, are dealt with in the judicial system.

3. Should Iowa ban the use of hand-held mobile devices while driving? Why or why not?

I am 100 percent behind hands free devices. Just drive a little in Iowa and there is your answer.

4. What, if any, measures should the legislature take to address staffing, pay and resident safety in nursing homes? Why do you favor these measures?

There's a high rate of turnover and burnout with this occupation because it's a tough Job. I believe research in a bipartisan way should be conducted.

5. Iowa has the second highest cancer rate in the nation. Should the state provide additional funding for cancer research, screenings or prevention programs for residents? Why or why not?

Cancer research in general should have adequate funding, especially the hospitals and colleges who work with cancer research.

6. What if any, measures would you enact to improve water quality in Iowa? Why do you feel this approach is the best way to move forward?

Research, research, research and hold companies accountable for pollution issues. EPA also should be doing their job by being properly funded and supported.

7. What would you do to improve delivery of mental health services in Iowa? What measures would you want in place to determine whether the measures are effective?

[Candidate did not provide an answer to this question.]

8. What, if any, measures should the legislature take to address access to abortion, contraception and in vitro fertilization?

[Candidate did not provide an answer to this question.]

9. Do you support a bill that would define 'life' as 'at conception?' Why or why not?

[Candidate did not provide an answer to this question.]

10. What would you do to improve the delivery of public education in Iowa? And what role, if any, should the Iowa Legislature have in setting curriculum standards and guiding what students are taught in the classroom?

[Candidate did not provide an answer to this question.]

11. What would you do to make Iowa more attractive for investment and growth?

Look at affordable housing, entertainment (adults and families), building up Main Street incentives, public school system, infrastructure, clean energy systems, keeping small towns relative to the way Iowa has been known for.
