IOWA CITY – The Iowa City school board is considering enacting a policy that would try to prevent classes from having too many students.
The board Tuesday night had a first reading, which does not require a vote, on a guideline that sets goals for the student-to-teacher ratios in schools. Two more readings are necessary to adopt it.
The language in the policy refers to the numbers as “aspirational goals,” recognizing that there are limitations in terms of building design and staffing that could prevent all classrooms from meeting the targets.
The policy calls for no more than 24 students in kindergarten through second-grade classrooms, 28 students for grades three through six, 30 students for the junior high schools and 32 for the high schools.
