The pro-casino campaign Vote Yes Linn County is out with its first television commercial.
Titled "New Jobs," the commercial asks voters to support a new casino because it will be responsible for more than 600 new Cedar Rapids area jobs — 137 construction jobs, 362 jobs at the new casino, and 130 new jobs at existing businesses because of the customers using the casino.
The commercial projects that a new Cedar Rapids area casino will attract more than 1 million customers and tourists a year.
"For over 600 new jobs, for over a million new customers for local business, for a new casino in Linn County, vote yes Linn County," the 30-second advertisement says.
With the commercial hitting the air on Wednesday, the group opposed to a Linn County casino, Just Say No Casino, quickly issued a news release to make its case.
In the release, Frank King, chairman of the Just Say No Casino group, says the TV spot is "full of empty promises."
"The truth is a casino in Cedar Rapids is no substitute for real economic development," said King. He said a casino will take money and jobs from existing businesses.
A vote to approve or disapprove gambling in Linn County is expected to take place on March 5.
