KCRG, Gazette to offer live broadcast of Iowa 1st District debate May 21

The May 21 debate between U.S. House 1st Districts Republican hopefuls Rod Blum and Ben Lange will be carried live on KCRG on cable channel 9.2, and

Blum, a Dubuque businessman, and Lange, an Independence attorney, will debate at 7 p.m. at Kirkwood Community College, room 234 in Cedar Hall, 6301 Kirkwood Blvd. SW. The winner of the Blum-Lange June 5 primary election contest will face Rep. Bruce Braley, a Waterloo Democrat, in the Nov. 6 general election.

Five Seasons Republican Women of Cedar Rapids is hosting the debate in partnership with Kirkwood Community College and SourceMedia Group, parent company of KCRG-TV 9 and The Gazette.

The debate will be moderated by Tami Wiencek, former 20-year KWWL news anchor/reporter and former Iowa House Representative. She now works for Musco Lighting and William Penn University in Oskaloosa.

The debate will be conducted in a presidential primary format. Candidates will make opening remarks, receive questions from the moderator, and make closing remarks. Candidate responses will be timed, and a coin toss will determine which candidate goes first.

Seating is limited, and tickets are required to attend. The Blum and Lange campaigns each have 40 tickets. Supporters should contact the campaigns directly to request these tickets. The Five Seasons Republican Women have 70 tickets which will be distributed to their members.

Doors will open at 6:20 p.m. and all ticketed attendees must be seated by 6:50 to accommodate the live coverage.The candidates will meet in a Poweshiek County GOP forum May 12 in Grinnell.
