Help improve lives of people with disabilities
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Mar. 22, 2012 12:57 am
The Arc of East Central Iowa joins advocates across the country to recognize March as Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, commemorating progress in improving the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities
(I/DD) and highlighting the challenges that remain in achieving full inclusion for them.
President Ronald Reagan's 1987 proclamation affirmed that “Americans are becoming increasingly aware that such disabilities need not keep individuals from realizing their full potential in school, at work or at home, as members of their families and of their communities.”
People with these disabilities deserve respect; and while there have been many positive strides, there is much to be done. Respect is hard won and possible only by changing attitudes and creating opportunity.
Locally, The Arc will rally supporters at 8:30 a.m. March 31 at Lindale Mall to celebrate the victories won through the years and reaffirm a commitment to be more included in all aspects of community living.
This month, join us in raising awareness through any of the following ways: volunteer, donate, speak up against the use of the r-word, speak out to elected
officials on issues impacting people with disabilities, and more. Visit www.arceci.org to learn what else you can do to help.
