According to troopers, a car driven by Zachary Swenka, 18, was traveling eastbound on Highway 6 near Half Moon Avenue when it crossed the center line and slammed into a minivan.
Six people were traveling in the car and two in the minivan, officers said.
In addition to the fatality, five teens in the car were injured. Chloe Keith, 14; Dustin Cox, 14; Daniel Brechtel, 15; and Zachary Swenka, 18 all went to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City via ambulance. Responders flew Claire Riggan, 14, to the hospital via aircare. All of them were wearing seatbelts.
Two people in the minivan, Bryan Scott Cooling, 47, and Toni Harney Cooling, 42, both of Oxford, were also hurt and were taken to UIHC.
At least a dozen Clear Creek Amana high school students witnessed the crash. An ambulance was seen transporting many of the students back to the school, which is about a mile from the crash scene.
The crash shut down the highway for several hours while investigators worked the scene. It has since reopened.
