AMES - The color of the print on newly issued Iowa license plates will change from blue to black starting next week.
The Iowa Department of Transportation said the change will affect only standard and specialty plates that have blue and white backgrounds. It will not affect specialty plates that use special colors for the numbers and letters, such as collegiate and firefighter plates.
The DOT said changing the print to black will make the characters easier to read. It also will make production of the plates more consistent and cost-effective.
The design on the plates won't change.
