An 84-year-old driver apparently hit the gas instead of the brake when she tried to park in front of a woman’s clothing store Friday morning. And the resulting surge drove the car right through the plate glass at the front of the store.

Police said the accident at Catherine’s Plus Sizes, 1440 Twixtown Road Marion, happened at about 9:30 Friday morning. Marion Police identified the driver as Margaret Dodge, 1148 Clifton St. N.E. Cedar Rapids.

Police said the accident happened before the store opened. No one inside the store was injured and the 84-year-old Dodge was unhurt as well.

Steve Pickering, owner of a nearby store, heard the bang and ran out to see what had happened.

“We ran down there to make sure everybody was all right and the lady was still sitting in her car and they told her to wait there until the police got there and nobody was hurt in the store which was a miracle,” Pickering said.

Marion Police estimated damages to the car at about $1,000.  There was no damage estimate for the store itself.  The store, located in the Collins Road Square mall, was expected to stay closed until sometime Friday afternoon for repairs.

Police did not file charges in the mishap.
