Details released on Iowa lineman's Interstate 80 crash
Apr. 13, 2011 2:23 pm
It took at least an hour to free Iowa football player Dan Heiar from his truck after a single-vehicle accident in the early morning hours of April 10 sent the offensive lineman to University Hospitals, where he remains.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper Matt Costello says Heiar, a community college transfer and native of Charlotte, Iowa, was involved in an accident at 2:45 am last Sunday. Costello said Heiar was westbound on Interstate 80 when his truck veered off the road and hit a guardrail at the 255 mile marker, one of the West Branch interchanges. The truck then went down a hill and came to rest on its top, pinning the driver inside.
Once Heiar was removed from the truck, rescue crews took him to the UIHC, where his condition remains unknown.
Costello is still investigating the causes of the crash. He says alcohol was found inside the truck, but he does not have Heiar's BAC to confirm if he was drunk at the time of the accident. The trooper also said wheel marks and the lack of signs of braking suggest Heiar may have fallen asleep while driving.
The trooper says when he spoke with Heiar at the hospital following the crash the football player couldn't recall where he was coming from or where he was going. The investigation is still ongoing and no charges have been filed.
