Iowa City to implement new recycling system

Recycling should be simpler for Iowa City residents starting April 4.
The city is implementing a “dual stream” system, in which recyclables are divided into two piles: one for fiber and paper and another for plastic and cans. Items also can be placed directly into recycling bins, eliminating the need to separate them using plastic bags, according to a news release.
Under the new system, similar items should be stacked together and then placed in the recycle bin. If using one bin, residents should put newspapers on one side, magazines on the other and plastics and cans on top. Cardboard can be placed under the bin if it is too large to fit inside.
If using two bins, residents can sort and stack fiber and paper in one, and plastics and cans in the other.
“We hope that by simplifying the process, we will be able to encourage more residents to use the city's curbside recycling service,” Jennifer Jordan, Iowa City's recycling coordinator, said in a statement. “Every bin of recyclables left by the curb each week contributes to a reduction in the volume of garbage going into the landfill, which helps conserve resources and extends the life of the landfill.”
Iowa City currently picks up about 1,600 tons of recycled items each year through its curbside pick-up program, according to the news release. Jordan wants to see that number climb to at least 2,000 tons annually.
Extra recycle bins may be ordered for $12 by calling (319) 356-5180. Residents may also opt to use other types of plastic bins, but the city will not replace those containers if they are lost or damaged. City tags are no longer required for bins that are not city-issued.
Glass cannot be recycled curbside, but can be dropped off at one of four recycling sites in town: East Side Recycling Center, 2401 Scott Blvd. SE; Hy-Vee, 1201 N. Dodge St.; the recycling center at the landfill, 3900 Hebl Ave. SW; or City Carton, 3 E. Benton St.
