A handicapped man traveling in a wheelchair was taken to the hospital Wednesday morning after being hit by a taxi while crossing an Iowa City street.
The man was crossing the intersection of Burlington and Dubuque streets in Iowa City around 11:10 a.m. when a taxi, driven by a man whose name and age could not be verified, hit the man in the middle of the intersection, knocking him from the wheelchair.
The taxi, from Yellow Cab of Iowa City, was southbound on Dubuque Street attempting to turn east onto Burlington Street. The taxi driver told police the sun was in his eyes and he did not see the man crossing the street.
The pedestrian suffered cuts to his head from the collision and was taken to University Hospitals for further medical care.
Police charged the driver with failure to yield to a pedestrian.
