Police records in Des Moines reveal that the Iowa attorney general's chief of staff was arrested for drunken driving earlier this month after an officer noticed his vehicle driving on two lanes.
The records show that 54-year-old Eric Tabor of West Des Moines was charged April 3 with operating while intoxicated, failure to use a turn signal, and improper use of lanes.
A preliminary breath test registered .249 - three times the legal limit. The report said Tabor refused to take an official blood-alcohol test later at the police station.
A suspected drunk driver who refuses to take a test at the police station automatically loses his or her driver's license for a full year.
Tabor told the Des Moines Register on Monday that he takes full responsibility for his actions and will accept the consequences.
Tabor served as chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party in the early 1990s. He also narrowly lost the race for Iowa's Second Congressional District to Republican Jim Nussle in 1990.
