Cedar Rapids largest private employers aren't quite ready to jump at Mayor Ron Corbett's recommendation Monday that they help the city's flood recovery by moving hundreds of workers downtown.
Rockwell Collins said it liked the idea, but said the timing's a problem.
“We applaud Mayor Corbett's initiative and share his goal of rebuilding a vibrant downtown - which is an influencing factor for attracting and retaining a talented work force,” said Rockwell Collins spokeswoman Pam Tvrdy.
“Unfortunately, because of the economic environment this past year, we've had to consolidate facilities into our existing C Avenue campus and have no plans to add facilities at this time.”
In a brief statement, leading insurer AEGON USA made it clear that flood recovery isn't its only consideration in locating facilities.
“We take many factors into account in making location decisions, including the current capacity in our owned facilities, technology considerations and the proximity to other administrative support functions,” said company spokeswoman Cindy Nodorft.
Corbett called on the city's largest employers to lease space and move hundreds of employees downtown during a forum on the future of downtown sponsored by The Gazette Family of Companies. He mentioned Rockwell Collins and AEGON by name, saying their actions would send a message the city's larger employers are back.
