IOWA CITY - Gov. Chet Culver today announced native son and famed artist Grant Wood as the newest recipient of the Iowa Award, the state's highest citizen honor.
Culver made the announcement in Iowa City, at the home on E. Court Street where Wood lived for the last seven years of his life while he taught at the University of Iowa.
Wood's name joins select company on the list of Iowa Award winners from the past 60 years, including Herbert Hoover, Henry A. Wallace, Meredith Willson and James Van Allen. The award is given every three or four years.
Wood, the painter of “American Gothic,” was born in Anamosa and raised in Cedar Rapids.
