DES MOINES — Elle Ruffridge was among the viewers the day that Alexis Conaway scored 46 points at Wells Fargo Arena.

“When she broke the record, I thought, ‘Wow, she’s a stud,’” Ruffridge said. “I thought, ‘Maybe I can do something like that someday.’”

Or maybe, she could do more.

Ruffridge set single-game state-tournament records with 48 points and eight 3-pointers, and second-ranked Pocahontas Area outran No. 3 Center Point-Urbana, 80-59, in a Class 3A semifinal at the girls’ state basketball tournament Thursday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

“Sometimes, we broke down on defense,” CPU Coach Philip Klett said. “Sometimes, it was just her making plays.”

The state’s career leader in points (2,929), 3-pointers (460) and assists (798), Ruffridge made 12 of 20 shots from the floor, including 8 of 12 from long range, and sank all 16 of her free-throw attempts.

“She’s explosive,” CPU’s LaMia Sisk said. “She’ll shoot it right in your face.”

The defending 3A champion, Pocahontas Area (26-1) seeks a repeat at 4 p.m. Saturday, against No. 1 Sioux Center, an 81-56 winner over No. 5 Cherokee.

Conaway, former star at MOC-Floyd Valley, set the record in 2014, against Mediapolis. Ruffridge tied the mark with a pair of free throws with 3:43 left, then added two more 15 seconds later.

Center Point-Urbana (22-4) bowed out in the semifinals for the second straight year. All of their starters will return for 2017-18.

“I’m saying now, our goal next year is to get to the championship game,” said Allie Wooldridge, who led the Stormin’ Pointers with 18 points — including a half-court shot at the end of the first half — and 11 rebounds.

“The offseason begins today. We’re going to keep playing our other sports, but this summer, we’re going to get in the gym and we’re going to lift and get better.”

CPU was within 17-14 early in the second quarter, then the Indians stung them with a 12-0 run that only took a couple minutes.

Ruffridge scored 19 points in the second quarter on her way to 30 at halftime. Pocahontas Area enjoyed a 43-25 advantage at intermission, and it was 62-39 after three quarters.

Callyn Fox added 14 points for CPU. Sisk tallied 10.
