CEDAR RAPIDS - New seasons offer an empty mat for success.
The Cedar Rapids Xavier wrestling team looks to fill the gap with success this season.
The Saints returned two state qualifiers to their wrestling team this season - senior Keegan Schultschik and junior Patrick Chambers. They also welcomed back junior letterwinners Isaac Ball, Kyle Krezek and Garrett Ries. The Saints also are excited to see capable freshmen on the mat.
'My initial goal for the season is to get the guys back into wrestling shape after a great football season,” Coach Ryan Chambers said.
Even with a younger team, the Saints still hope to have individuals qualify for the state meet.
'As always, I hope to help each individual get better by improving their skill set and allowing them to qualify and place at the state meet,” Coach Chambers said.
The Xavier wrestling team is a community and the athletes grow closer throughout the season.
'I am excited to be back with the wrestling team,” Ball said. 'We become closer during the winter, and we all have a special bond throughout the season.”
The Saints host the Doug Philipp Duals Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
