DES MOINES — Jared Brinkman’s first throw was a scratch.

His last throw was a state meet record.

In the minutes following Thursday’s medal ceremony, the Iowa City Regina senior was still in shock.

“The whole time I was nervous,” Brinkman said. “Any one of these guys could have popped one off. I just had to keep coming out and throwing my best.”

The UNI football signee won the Class 2A boys shot put tossing 63 feet, 4 inches. It broke a 40-year record set by Jeff DeVilder (BGM) by a foot and a half and bested the rest of the field by nearly two feet.

Western Christian’s Caden Fenchel and KP-WC’s Nick Phelps were second and third. Mid-Prairie’s Levi Duwa was fifth with his throw of 56 feet, 11.25 inches.

“It was a great year of throwers,” Brinkman said. “I’m definitely going to miss it, but it was great to go out on top.”

South Winneshiek’s Nathan Ward took third in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 50.12. Albia’s Kyle Sinnott won in 49.32. Ward started in lane two of the final heat and was able to creep his way up along the backstretch.

“I knew with the inside corner if I got a good, fast, steady pace I could get on the corner and hopefully get some guys,” Ward said. “It ended up pretty decent.”

Mid-Prairie’s 3,200-meter relay team of Andrew Schwartz, Marshal Teets, Cary Schaefer and Peyton Miller took third in 8:07.97.

Madrid is on top in the team race with 19 points, followed closely by KP-WC (18). Iowa City Regina’s and Mid-Prairie’s teams are fourth and fifth, respectively.
