Prairie stuffs Xavier, 56-30

Girls' basketball: Sid McCrea leads the way as Hawks shoot 56 percent from the floor

CEDAR RAPIDS — No extensive analysis needed on this one. Cedar Rapids Prairie made shots, and Cedar Rapids Xavier didn’t.

Sid McCrea collected 20 points and five assists, and Class 5A 12th-ranked Prairie shot 56 percent from the floor in a 56-30 non-conference girls’ basketball triumph between the Metro rivals Friday night at Prairie High School.

“We were coming off a tough loss before break, and we focused a lot on fundamentals,” McCrea said. “I think we really improved a lot over break. We kind of got down to basics, and tonight we moved the ball well.”

The Hawks (6-4) made 22 of 39 shots from the floor (including 5 of 8 from distance). Class 4A No. 11 Xavier (6-5) was 10 of 41, for 24 percent.

And that was the ball game right there.

“We learned in our last game before break (a 75-71 loss to Iowa City West, in which the Hawks led late) that we need to focus more on details,” Prairie Coach Josh Bentley said. “Little things lead to big things.”

Sarah Schmitt, a junior committed to the University of Nebraska-Omaha, added 12 points. She and McCrea combined to sink 12 of 16 floor shots, including all four from 3-point range.

Xavier scored the first four points of the game, then Prairie roared back with 17 in a row. The margin didn’t stray below double digits again.

It was 30-13 at halftime.

“We watched enough tape, and we thought we knew what they were going to do,” Xavier Coach Tom Lilly said. “They put McCrea at the top, and kept running their ‘man’ offense. We didn’t adjust, and she got to the rim very well.”

Leading 41-27 late in the third quarter, Prairie made another run, scoring 11 in a row to blow it open.

Amelia Ivester paced Xavier with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The teams meet Feb. 2 at Xavier in a game that counts in the MVC standings.
